Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (Commissioner), David Allen, has started his search for Cumbria Constabulary’s next Chief Constable.
The previous Chief Constable, Rob Carden, left the position in Cumbria Constabulary to return to Merseyside Police as Chief Constable in 2025. Since his departure, Deputy Chief Constable Darren Martland has been acting as Temporary Chief Constable.
The advert for Chief Constable launched on Friday 2 January and will close to any applicants on Friday 23 January.
Commissioner David Allen said: “I am looking for a Chief Constable that will focus on providing an outstanding service to the public, supporting victims of crime, tackling criminality head on and increasing public confidence in the Police.
“My Police, Fire and Crime Plan revolves around one key vision: Protecting Cumbria. To achieve this vision, I need Cumbria Constabulary to have a strong leader who is passionate about keeping people safe.
“Cumbria is one of the safest counties in the UK. However, due to its size and geography, it comes with a unique set of challenges, so the Chief Constable must be innovative and dynamic.
“I’ve written to all Chief Constables and Deputy Chief Constables across England and Wales inviting them to apply for the role, if interested.
“I can promise the public that I will only appoint a candidate that I know will tackle challenges head on, provide the best service possible to the public and support Officers to do their job to the best of their ability.
“Once a preferred candidate has been chosen, I will let residents know. The preferred candidate will then go through to a confirmatory hearing at the Police, Fire and Crime Panel to ensure that I have picked the most suitable candidate.”
