Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “I welcome the Government’s new Road Safety Strategy.
“Road safety is one of the key concerns raised with me by the public and therefore it is a priority for me and the Constabulary.
“I look forward to leaning into the consultations that are highlighted throughout the strategy – local knowledge and insight is essential to help built a national picture and I will ensure Cumbria’s voice is heard.
“We’ve seen the devastation that fatal and serious injury collisions can have – I’ve met with Sharron Huddleston who spoke to me about her daughter, Caitlin, who tragically lost her life in 2017 in a car crash at 18 years old. She was a passenger in a car driven by her friend, who also lost her life, who had passed her driving test four months previously after losing control of the car on a bend in a wet, rural road. Sharron now campaigns for Graduated Driving Licenses. A cause I support fully and wholeheartedly and will continue to do so going forward.
“We all want our roads to be safer for everyone. The majority of Cumbria’s roads are rural and often single tracked, so ensuring that motorists are in the best position possible to get to their destinations safely is vital.
“I’ll be liaising with the Government and Chief Constable around this new strategy to ensure that Cumbria Pollice and partners can deliver road safety to the best of their ability. We need to make sure that every decision is right for Cumbria. This strategy is a good starting point, but, and to be clear, that is what it is, a starting point, where we can we will improve on it and do better for the public of Cumbria.
“As the strategy comes into practice, I will continue to keep the public updated on how we are keeping them safe on the road.”
